St Bartholomew's Church in Okunica

Okunica, Okunica
About St Bartholomew's Church in Okunica

An early Modernist brick church from 1914-1916 in Okunica, with stained glass from the time of construction.

St Bartholomew the Apostle's Church in Okunica, in Pyrzyce municipality, is a filial church of the parish of St Otto in Pyrzyce. It was built in 1914-1916 as a Protestant church (parish in Ryszewo) in the early Modernist style, and in 1945 it was consecrated as a Catholic one. It was entered in the heritage register in 2019.

The building

The brick church, plastered on the outside, stands on a high stone plinth, on a rectangular plan with a chancel closed on four sides and a gable roof. The gable façade is decorated with a cross-shaped blind window, in front of which stands a porch with the entrance in a round-arched recess. A square tower with a portal, round windows higher up and a pointed roof topped with a ball and cross adjoins it on the south-west side.

Interior

The interior is covered by a plastered barrel ceiling, on the west wall is a gallery on two pillars, and the chancel is separated from the nave by a chancel arch. Nineteenth-century furnishings have survived: an altar, a pulpit, pews and a chandelier. In the chancel are stained-glass windows from the time of construction, and the windows in the nave were made in 1987 by Maria Powalisz-Bardońska.

In the area lies the Brodogóry nature reserve, about 2.4 km from the village.
