Church of St Michael the Archangel in Stary Przylep

Stary Przylep 25, Stary Przylep
About Church of St Michael the Archangel in Stary Przylep

A church rebuilt in 1681 after the Swedes burnt the village, with a Baroque tower spire of 1778 and polychromy inside.

The Church of St Michael the Archangel in Stary Przylep already existed in the 14th century. It was destroyed in 1637, when the village was burnt by the Swedes during the Thirty Years' War. It was rebuilt in its present form in 1681, and at that time a tower was also added, which in 1778 was topped with a Baroque spire.

Alterations and architecture

In 1827 the church was rebuilt and plastered. Because of the numerous changes the original form of the church is no longer legible today. It stands on a rectangular plan, with a tower on the west. The tower is crowned with a spire with a lantern, its windows are set in round-arched recesses, and on the ground floor is the entrance portal. The main nave is covered with a gabled roof.

Interior

Polychromy has survived on the vault and the walls. The church holds an 18th-century pulpit altar (altered in modern times), a 19th-century pulpit and font, and an 18th-century candlestick. Above the entrance is a wooden gallery. After the war the church was consecrated as a Catholic one, in 1948. Not far away, about 2.5 km from here, stands the church in Obryta.
