Lake Czajcze

About Lake Czajcze

Horseshoe-shaped lake on Wolin Island, with a peninsula of a former stronghold and a glacial boulder, Wydrzy Głaz.

Lake Czajcze lies on Wolin Island, in Wolin municipality, and is the second largest lake on the island, after Lake Koprowo. The body of water is horseshoe-shaped, and what sets it apart is a peninsula cutting into the water and two boulders by the shore.

The peninsula and traces of ramparts

The peninsula dividing the lake into two parts was still an island about 160 years ago. In the 11th and 12th centuries it sheltered the inhabitants of the surrounding strongholds from invaders, as shown by surviving traces of defensive ramparts. The eastern shore of the lake is sandy.

Boulders and birds

On one of the large boulders a plaque commemorating the 1000th anniversary of the Polish State has been placed. The second boulder, emerging from the water, draws more attention: a glacial erratic with a circumference of more than 7 metres. According to legend otters basked on it, hence its name, Wydrzy Głaz (Otter Boulder). No otters can be seen here today, but you may meet mute swans, herons, sandpipers, bitterns, reed warblers, grebes and ducks.
