About Lake Kamienica

A ribbon lake near Dargocice with a bathing site, a camping site and a legend of a sunken town.

Kamienica is a ribbon lake on the Gryfice Plain, in Kołobrzeg County, on the border of the Gościno and Siemyśl municipalities. It lies in the catchment of the Błotnica River, which flows out of it. Until 1945 it bore the German name Kämitz See, and the present Polish name was officially established in 1949.

By the water

The surface area of the water ranges from 66.2 to 75.0 ha, depending on the measurement. The average depth is 5.9 m, and the greatest 12.2 m. In the central part a bathing site of local importance has been set up, with a renovated jetty and a beach. The lake is also a popular place for angling. On the shore, in the village of Dargocice, stand small holiday centres, and a campsite and a camping site are available. On the whole water body a year-round ban on the use of boats with combustion engines applies for recreation, water sports and fishing.

The legend of the sunken town

The lake is associated with a story of a sunken town. According to it, the town was sunk for a sacrilegious act of the mayor, who had the road along which his daughter walked to her wedding strewn with breadcrumbs. It is said that before Easter bells can be heard from the depths, and once a year the water falls so low that the top of a church tower can be seen.

Half a kilometre east of the lake rises Łysica, a hill 76 m above sea level.
