A brick lighthouse from 1876-1878 in Gąski, open to visitors, with a viewing terrace reached by 190 steps.
Gąski Lighthouse is a brick tower from 1876-1878, one of the lighthouses of the Slovincian Coast, open to visitors. It stands in the centre of the village in Mielno municipality, between the lighthouses in Kołobrzeg (about 22 km to the west) and in Darłowo (about 40 km to the east). 190 granite steps lead to the terrace at the top, and from above you can see the coast from Sarbinowo to Unieście.
The lighthouse was built in 1876-1878, and the materials were brought by ships and unloaded on a specially built jetty. It is a typical three-part structure: the base is an octagon with a diameter of 11.3 m, and on it stands a round tower with walls 3.3 m thick, faced on both sides.
Wikipedia gives the height of the tower as 49.80 m (light at 51.10 m above sea level), and the Gąski village website as 50.2 m. Originally the lighthouse had a paraffin Fresnel lens with a range of 18 nautical miles. According to documentation from 1927, electrically powered optics had already been installed. After the Second World War the lighthouse was put back into service in 1948, and today a ring-and-drum lens with a 1500 W bulb operates in the lantern.
The whole complex is entered in the heritage register: the lighthouse, the keepers' house, a barn, a livestock building, the fence and the wall. At the base of the tower there are the keeper's house, food and souvenir stalls and a landscaped area, and a car park is a short distance away. The manager is the Maritime Office in Szczecin.
Waymarked trails cross near the lighthouse: the Coastal Trail for walkers and, for cyclists, EV10 Baltic Sea Cycle Route and the Palace Cycle Trail. The lighthouse is also one of the points on the section of the E9 trail in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship. A few kilometres further on, in Chłopy, there is a fishing village museum, and next to it stands a fishing harbour.
