About Trawiasta Buczyna Nature Reserve named after Professor Stefan Kownas

A reserve of old-growth beech forest on the edge of the Beech Forest, with Lusatian culture barrows and a red trail by the boundary.

Trawiasta Buczyna named after Professor Stefan Kownas is a forest reserve in Stare Czarnowo municipality, on the south-eastern edge of the Beech Forest, within Szczecin Landscape Park “Puszcza Bukowa”. It was established in 1956 and protects old-growth beech forest on a level moraine with numerous erratic boulders. The reserve is named after a botanist.

Forest and plants

Beeches grow here together with oak, alder, ash and sycamore, and in depressions in the terrain there are alder carrs, riparian forests and willow thickets by overgrown small lakes. The aim of protection is the Pomeranian beech forest with wood melick in the undergrowth and rare plants, for example round-leaved sundew and bogbean. The reserve covers 78.56 ha.

Barrows and trail

Four barrows from a Lusatian culture cemetery of the Bronze Age have survived in the forest. The largest is about 10 m in diameter and about 2 m high. Beside it lies an erratic boulder called the Altar, presumably a former cult stone. On the east side of the reserve, through the Budy Forest, runs the red-marked Trail through the Trawiasta Buczyna (Szlak przez Trawiastą Buczynę). In the area lies the arboretum in Glinna.

Practical information

  • Location: about 2.5 km west of Stare Czarnowo, the northern boundary by voivodeship road no. 120.
  • The red trail runs along the eastern boundary; check the rules for moving around the reserve before a visit.
