The tower of a demolished Neo-Gothic Evangelical church from 1904, preserved as a landmark, today with a viewing terrace.
The tower of the Martin Luther church on Paderewskiego Street in Świnoujście is what remains of an Evangelical church built in 1904. The construction was financed by the foundation of Emilie Heyse, then the wealthiest resident of the town, and it was designed by Fritz Gottlieb. The church was Neo-Gothic and had a tower with a clock and four bells. The tower measured 62 m.
The church was destroyed during the Second World War. In 1962 it began to be demolished, but it was decided to leave the tower, because it had been placed on navigation charts, and changing them would have been a complicated undertaking. The tower is entered in the heritage register.
In 2003 a private investor was found who renovated the tower. According to the Wikipedia entry it was opened in 2005: a café was set up on the two lower storeys, and at the top the highest viewpoint in the town was created, with a panorama of Świnoujście. The present tower is 20 m lower than the original, because the construction of the terrace required it. From the café one enters the tower by a winding staircase, with benches for resting on the way, and the whole climb has 222 steps.
The tower stands not far from the Star of the Sea church.
Close by lies the Spa Park.
About seven hundred metres from the tower is the Sea Fishing Museum.
