A Gothic hospital chapel in Trzebiatów, the site of the 1534 Diet, an Orthodox church since 1956.
The Chapel of the Holy Spirit on Wojska Polskiego Street in Trzebiatów is one of three surviving Gothic hospital chapels in the town. Since 1956 it has served Orthodox believers, and in 1534 the Diet of the Estates of Pomerania was held here.
The Wikipedia entry says that the chapel was built in the 13th century and rebuilt in the 15th century, while the heritage register dates it to the end of the 15th century. It is built of brick, 17 m long and 9 m high. The north-west gable is decorated with blind windows modelled on the Collegiate Church of St Mary in Stargard. The chapel formed part of the hospital and care buildings founded by the town council.
In 1534 the Diet of the Estates of Pomerania met in the chapel. The dukes of the House of Griffin decided there to introduce Protestantism as the state religion, which gave rise to the Pomeranian Evangelical Church.
From the 18th century the building was a warehouse, later a fire station. At the beginning of the 20th century it was turned into the assembly hall of a girls' school, whose buildings stood next to the chapel. After the Second World War, in 1956, it was handed over to Orthodox believers. Today it is a parish chapel of the Szczecin deanery of the Diocese of Wrocław-Szczecin of the Polish Autocephalous Orthodox Church. Inside, polychromes have survived on the false vault, the walls and the balustrade of the organ gallery. The chapel is entered in the heritage register under number 200 of 1957.
