Church of Christ the King in Witnica

Moryńska 13, Witnica
About Church of Christ the King in Witnica

Gothic church of the 13th and 15th centuries in Witnica near Moryń, of granite ashlar, with a polychrome ceiling and a Renaissance cemetery gate.

The Church of Christ the King in Witnica is a Catholic parish church in the village of Witnica in Moryń municipality, in Gryfino County. The nave dates from the 13th century and the tower from the 15th century. The church is entered in the heritage register.

The building

The church was built of granite ashlar. It is an oriented single-room hall on a rectangular plan, covered with a gabled roof. The tower, of defensive character, was added in the 15th century, and in 1830 the church was thoroughly rebuilt: the windows were re-walled and a burial chapel was added. In 1911 a sacristy was built on the south side and the porch under the tower was rebuilt. The late medieval east gable is decorated with eight pointed-arch blind niches in a pyramidal arrangement, topped with pinnacles. The tower, with blind niches and small windows, ends in battlements and a brick spire with a cross.

Interior

The interior is covered with a wooden barrel-vaulted ceiling with polychromy, and the nave is surrounded by a two-storey gallery. Carved and painted coats of arms are placed in the patron's box and on the choir balustrade. On the north wall hangs the 18th-century wooden epitaph of Christoph von Sack. The former pulpit altar was made in 1748 in the Moryń workshop of H.B. Hattenkerell. The church also has a historic font.

After the war and surroundings

The church was reconsecrated as a Catholic church on 29 November 1952. A cemetery enclosed by a stone wall, with a Renaissance gate, adjoins it. Nearby lies the castle in Moryń.
