About Church of Our Lady of Sorrows in Chociwel

A Gothic brick church from the early 15th century, with neo-Gothic furnishings and the history of the Chociwel Passion.

The Church of Our Lady of Sorrows in Chociwel is a Gothic brick church built in several stages from the early 15th century. It is a parish church in the Ińsko deanery, and pastoral care there is provided by the Society of Christ Fathers. It is entered in the heritage register.

Construction and history

First, in 1408, the chancel was built, then around 1460 the nave and the tower, and around 1600 the annexes by the north and south facades. From 1530 the church was Protestant, and since 1945 it has been Catholic again. It was consecrated on 17 August 1945.

Interior

The body has three aisles separated by two rows of octagonal pillars supporting a star vault. The four-bay chancel has a single nave and a three-sided end. The furnishings are in the neo-Gothic style, among them a wooden altar with a triptych and paintings of Saints Peter and Paul, Moses and John the Baptist. The church also contains a limestone font and sculptures of saints, including the crucified and risen Christ, the Woman of the Apocalypse in lime wood, and St Catherine and St Barbara. The choir gallery has two levels.

The Chociwel Passion

The original furnishings included the Chociwel Passion, a Crucifixion group of five lime-wood sculptures from the early 16th century, attributed to the workshop of the anonymous Master of the Chociwel Passion. In 1883 it went to the Museum of Antiquities in Szczecin. Today the two surviving figures, of Christ and the Bad Thief, are shown in the permanent exhibition at the National Museum in Szczecin.
