Warszyn 12, Warszyn
About Church of St Anthony in Warszyn

A granite church from the late 13th century in Warszyn, with a wooden tower of 1769, a pulpit altar and a bell of 1525.

The church in Warszyn, a village in Dolice municipality, was built in the last quarter of the 13th century. It is built of dressed granite, and its wooden tower of 1769 and bell of 1525 are among its most notable features.

The building

It is a hall building on a rectangular plan measuring 20.8 × 8.8 m, surrounded by an obliquely profiled plinth. Above the western part of the nave stands a wooden tower built up in 1769, topped with a Baroque spire with a lantern. The side walls have kept four original narrow, slightly pointed windows each. The west gable is decorated with five blind arches in a pyramid arrangement, the middle one with an oculus, and the east gable has four pointed blind arches with a cross above them. In the east wall there is a portal to the chancel, the so-called priest's portal, cut in the 18th century.

Furnishings and surroundings

In the chancel stands a carved and polychrome pulpit altar from the first half of the 18th century, decorated with Ionic columns, with the pulpit basket removed. A bronze bell cast in 1525 hangs in the tower. From the 16th century the church was Lutheran, and it was blessed as a Catholic church in 1949. Around it extends the area of the former cemetery, enclosed by a stone wall, with a walled-up brick gate from the end of the 15th century.
