Artylerzystów, Boleszkowice
About Church of St Anthony of Padua in Boleszkowice

A neo-Gothic church in Boleszkowice from the mid-19th century, with a granite base of the tower from the 14th century and a polychrome altar.

The Church of St Anthony of Padua in Boleszkowice, in Myślibórz County, has its roots in the 14th century, and the first mention dates from 1401. Fires in the town destroyed it in 1536, 1633 and 1718. In the middle of the 19th century it was pulled down and built anew, partly from the old material.

Architecture

The present church is neo-Gothic, oriented, on the plan of a Latin cross with a transept and a five-sided apse. The stone walls have brick details, and the granite walls in the lower part of the tower have survived from the original building. Porches with stepped portals were added to the arms of the transept, and above them in the gables rose windows can be seen. On the west side rises a two-storey tower with triangular gables, turrets, pointed blind arcades and clock faces, covered by a conical spire.

Interior

The wooden ceiling is painted blue. The chancel arch and the vault of the chancel are covered with polychromes with floral and geometric motifs and heads of angels. In the chancel stands a wooden, polychrome neo-Gothic altar with a painting of St Anthony with the Child, and on its wings figures of St Joseph and St Francis; the predella holds paintings of the Last Supper, St Michael the Archangel and the baptism of Jesus. Three cast-iron bells from the early 20th century hang in the tower. After the war, on 13 June 1946, the church was consecrated as a Catholic one.

The town also has a Jewish cemetery.
