About Church of St Nicholas in Wałcz

Neo-Gothic brick parish church in Wałcz of 1863-1865, consecrated in 1866, with older items moved from the former church.

The Church of St Nicholas in Wałcz is a Neo-Gothic brick church built in 1863-1865 and consecrated in 1866. It is a parish church in the Wałcz deanery of the Diocese of Koszalin-Kołobrzeg and stands right next to the town hall.

After the war and renovations

In 1948 a new altar was blessed in the church, and in 1951 the church was renovated and the galleries were removed. In 1952 the altar of Our Lady of the Rosary was blessed, in 1954 a painting of Our Lady of Perpetual Help was installed, and in 1961 new stained-glass windows.

Furnishings from the old church

The most interesting are the items preserved from the previous church: four bells, a side altar with a silver covering, chasubles with gold and silver embroidery from 1620 and 1717, and six silver candlesticks from 1733. Also preserved are two small silver reliquaries, a chalice with an inscription and paintings: St John of 1816, the Last Supper (restored in 1818), St Michael and the Entombment. Three paintings were painted in 1866 by the painter Stankiewicz.

Exhibitions of old objects from the region are shown by the Wałcz Land Museum, about 400 metres away.
