Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Bobolice

Kościelna 2, Bobolice
About Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Bobolice

Neo-Gothic parish church of Bobolice of 1882-1886, built on the site of an older church from the time of the town's foundation.

The parish church of Bobolice stands on ul. Kościelna, in the heart of the town. The present Neo-Gothic church of red brick was built in 1882-1886 on the site of an older town church.

From a medieval parish church to Neo-Gothic

The building of the church was already planned at the foundation of the town in 1340, when the bishops of Kamień received the right of patronage over the town parish. Work began after 1350 and a small single-nave brick building with a rectangular tower was built. In 1563, when it belonged to the Lutherans, the first pastor was installed in it, and in 1631 the church was considerably rebuilt. In the second half of the 19th century the old church, dedicated to St John the Baptist, was pulled down and the present one was built. After 1945 it was taken over by Catholics, and it was consecrated on 9 June 1946.

Structure and interior

The church has the plan of an elongated rectangle with a chancel closed on five sides and a square tower. A sacristy stands by the chancel, and three-sided staircases by the side walls of the tower. The interior has three aisles. The walls were built of red brick on a foundation of granite stones. The building is entered in the heritage register.
