A Gothic hall church of stone and brick in Czernin, with a tower from around 1520, a Baroque altar and a 17th-century pulpit.
The Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Czernin, in Kołobrzeg County, is a Gothic building from the turn of the 14th and 15th centuries, later extended. The first church stood here already before 1281, when it was consecrated by the Bishop of Kamień, Hermann von Gleichen. The patronage was held by the Kołobrzeg chapter.
The present church is a modest hall building of stone and brick, with a nave on a rectangular plan and no separate chancel. The massive tower was added on the west side around 1520. Research in 1998 and 1999 removed the cement plaster and uncovered the oldest, eastern part of the church. Two windows with original Gothic grilles were found in it, together with two Gothic portals in the side walls and traces of the vaults of the former sacristy. A three-nave church was originally planned, but the body was destroyed in the 15th century or never built.
A Baroque altar from the 18th century with a bas-relief of the Last Supper has survived, together with a pulpit from the 17th century. An inventory of 1890 also recorded three brass crowns, figures of the Virgin and Child and of St Catherine, and three medieval bells. In 2012, because of its technical condition, the turret on the tower was taken down, and in 2015 a reconstructed spire was fitted.
Until 1945 it was a parish church; after the war it became a branch of the parish in Dygowo, and on 10 March 1946 it was consecrated as a Catholic church. Not far from it is the church in Dygowo.
