About Church of the Holy Spirit in Szczecin

A neo-Gothic church in Zdroje, built in 1893 for a Protestant congregation, with an organ from 1862.

The Church of the Holy Spirit stands in Szczecin's Zdroje district, on Młodzieży Polskiej Street. It was built at the turn of 1892 and 1893 for a Protestant congregation, and today it is a parish church of the Archdiocese of Szczecin-Kamień. It is a brick church in the neo-Gothic style, with a tower on the west side and an organ from 1862.

History

The Protestant congregation in Zdroje had existed since 1859. Construction, to a design by the royal builder Mannsdorf, began in 1892, and the church was consecrated on 10 September 1893 by Pastor Poetter. During the Second World War the building was damaged, and the helm disappeared from the tower and was replaced with a plain roof. Abandoned by its former worshippers, the church served for a time as a furniture warehouse.

The church was consecrated for Catholic worship on 15 August 1946 by Fr Kazimierz Świetliński TChr, and a parish was established in 1951. After the war new stained glass was installed, a presbytery was built in 1972-1975, and in 2007 the helm crowning the tower was rebuilt.

Architecture and interior

The church was built of brick on a rectangular plan, with a separate square-ended chancel and a gable roof. In the side walls, supported by buttresses, there are triple pointed-arch windows set in recesses. A tower with a conical helm rises by the west facade, and its ground floor contains a porch. Above the entrance portal there is a rose window, and higher up louvred windows.

The interior is a single space covered with a wooden barrel vault. On the west wall stands a neo-Gothic organ case with a working ten-stop organ by the Szczecin firm Grüneberg from 1862. Two hanging chandeliers in the shape of crowns from the early 20th century have also survived from the original furnishings.

Nearby

Emerald Lake (Jezioro Szmaragdowe) lies less than one and a half kilometres from the church.
