About Church of the Holy Trinity in Miękowo

A Fachwerk branch church of 1782 in Miękowo, with a tower topped by a bulbous cupola, formerly Protestant, Catholic since 1947.

The Church of the Holy Trinity in Miękowo is a half-timbered church of 1782, standing in the centre of the village on a small rise at a road junction. It belongs to the parish in Krępsko and is entered in the heritage register.

A timber frame and a tower with a bulbous cupola

It is a single-nave hall church of post-and-frame construction, built in the half-timbered technique: an oak frame filled with clay and brick, with the panels between the rails plastered and whitewashed. The nave has a rectangular end and measures 11.2 by 8.6 metres. In front of the west facade stands a three-storey tower about 14 metres high, topped with a Baroque bulbous cupola in the shape of an inverted chalice. The date 1782 appears on the weathervane and on the lintel of the tower door.

The windows are Neo-Gothic in shape, and the stained glass dates from the early 20th century. The Wikipedia entry classes the building among the half-timbered churches typical of West Pomerania in the 17th and 18th centuries, combining Baroque with Neo-Gothic.

From a Protestant to a Catholic church

The church was founded by the town of Goleniów. Until the end of the Second World War it belonged to the Protestant parish in Żółwia Błoć. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries pointed-arch windows were inserted and new furnishings were donated, including the altar, pulpit and some of the pews. As a Roman Catholic church dedicated to the Holy Trinity it was consecrated on 8 December 1947 and incorporated into the parish of St Catherine in Goleniów, and since 1985 it has belonged to the parish in Krępsko.

Renovations

The residents of Miękowo and neighbouring villages renovated the church in 1960-1970. A thorough renovation in 2004-2007 covered the roof truss, the timber-frame beams at the foundations and the roof covering. The bell tower, which was leaning towards national road no. 3, was straightened and anchored to the nave. Around the church the ground and paths were paved with granite setts, and the building was lit from four sides. The consecration after the general overhaul took place in 2018.

The interior contains a wooden choir gallery on four posts, a pulpit and an altar with a painting of the Holy Trinity. The grounds around, a former cemetery, are surrounded by a low stone wall with brick gate piers.
