Wolin Gate in Goleniów

Plac Bramy Wolińskiej 1, Goleniów
About Wolin Gate in Goleniów

A Gothic town gate in Goleniów from the 14th-15th century, 26 m high, the only one of four gates to survive; it houses a cultural centre and a tourist information office.

The Wolin Gate is one of the most valuable historic monuments in Goleniów. It was built in the 14th-15th century as one of four gates guarding the town and is the only one to have survived to this day. Today it houses the Goleniów Cultural Centre and a tourist information centre.

History

Originally a defensive watchtower of erratic boulders from the second half of the 13th century stood here. In the 14th and 15th centuries a brick tower was added on top. The heritage register gives a dating to the 14th century. The building has five storeys and until the 18th century served a defensive function. On one of the turrets that finish the wall by the gate there are two coats of arms of Goleniów: the historic one, with a river, a boat, a tree and a griffin, and the present one, with two crescents and four stars.

Architecture

It is a gabled gate in a form unchanged since the 15th century, built one quarter of stone and three quarters of brick. The gable walls are treated differently: the outer one is defensive in character, the inner one aesthetic. The height of the gate is 26 m, 29.85 m with the finial. The gate opening is 5.25 m high and 4.85 m wide, and the passage is 10.5 m long.

What it houses today

In 1971-1972 the gate was restored with a view to the Goleniów Land Museum, but when the work was finished it became the seat of the Goleniów Cultural Centre. In the former passage, after it was built up in 2002-2003, a tourist information centre was set up, so it is a good starting point for a walk around the town.

Nearby

By the gate the town walls have survived.

Not far away stands the Mint Tower.

Of the religious monuments the nearest is St Catherine's Church.
