A neo-Gothic church from 1905-1908 designed by Oskar Hoßfeld, a former Protestant Church of St Nicholas, with an organ by Paul Voelkner.
The Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary stands in the centre of Szczecinek on 3 Maja Street. It is a neo-Gothic brick church, built in 1905-1908 as the Protestant Church of St Nicholas (Neue Nikolai Kirche). Today it is a parish church belonging to the Szczecinek deanery.
The design was made by the Berlin architect Oskar Hoßfeld, and the construction was supervised by the building inspector D. A. Schäfer. The massive structure gained lightness thanks to its soaring windows and the pointed-arch ornaments of the transept gables. On the outside the nave is braced by tall buttresses. To the east it is closed by a hexagonal chancel with low annexes, and to the west rises a slender tower 78 m high. The main altar is of cabinet construction. The building is entered in the heritage register.
Of the former Church of St Nicholas, demolished in 1909, the tower was left, in which a museum was set up in 1914. The new Protestant church was handed over to Catholics on 8 September 1945, and in September of the same year it was consecrated under the dedication of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The parish was erected on 9 June 1973, and the church was consecrated on 8 September 1995 by Bishop Jan Gałecki.
In 1908 the church was equipped with a pneumatic 35-stop organ by Paul Voelkner with 1,670 pipes. The instrument stands in the gallery, above the galleries for the congregation. A general overhaul began in 2011 and ended in July 2014. All the façade pipes except one original painted pipe were then replaced, the damaged metal and wooden pipes were reconstructed, and the organ case was restored by conservators from Toruń.
A few hundred metres from the church stands the tower of the former Church of St Nicholas.
