Jewish Cemetery in Sławno

Sławno
About Jewish Cemetery in Sławno

Former Jewish cemetery of the mid-19th century in Sławno, with a lapidarium created in 2016-2017.

The Jewish cemetery in Sławno was established in the mid-19th century by today's Mieszka I and Gdańska streets. It covered 0.4 ha and was surrounded by a wall. In 1939 it was destroyed, and in the 1960s the gravestones were used to build roads. Today it is a grass-covered square on which fragments of broken matzevot (Jewish gravestones) and fragments of a brick enclosure from 1905 have survived.

Plaque and lapidarium

On 3 October 1999 a delegation of the American section of the International Dietrich Bonhoeffer Society unveiled on the wall of the cemetery chapel a plaque in memory of the Jewish community living around Sławno from 1812. The text is also in English and German, and the plaque was made by the Koszalin sculptor Zygmunt Wujek.

On the initiative of the town, in 2016-2017 the surviving gravestones from before 1945, mainly Jewish, were gathered in the Sławno lapidarium on the former cemetery. The manager of the municipal cemetery is the Municipal Utilities and Housing Company.
