New Synagogue in Szczecin

About New Synagogue in Szczecin

A synagogue built in 1873-1875 that no longer exists, burnt down on the night of 9 to 10 November 1938; a plaque next to the Pomeranian Library commemorates it.

The New Synagogue in Szczecin no longer exists. It stood at Grüne Schanze, and the site is now a plot at Dworcowa 9a. All that remains of the building is a commemorative plaque next to the Pomeranian Library.

Construction and appearance

The synagogue was built in 1873-1875 to a design by the Szczecin architect Konrad Krühl, on the site of an older wooden house of prayer known as the Old Synagogue. The solemn opening and the bringing in of the Torah scrolls took place on 3 May 1875. In the following years an organ, electric lighting and central heating were added.

The brick building was erected on a rectangular plan in the eclectic Moorish style. A vestibule in the western part led into the main prayer hall, surrounded on three sides by galleries for women. The whole could hold 1,500 people. The façade was crowned with tablets of the Decalogue and pinnacles.

Destruction

On the night of 9 to 10 November 1938 the synagogue was burnt down by Nazi paramilitary squads. In 1941 its ruins were blown up and cleared away.

Today

The synagogue is commemorated by a plaque at the Pomeranian Library. The detailed wording of the plaque is not included in this description, because it has not been checked in an open source.
