Jewish section of the Szczecin Central Cemetery

Szczecin
About Jewish section of the Szczecin Central Cemetery

A separate section for followers of Judaism, established in 1962, the only active Jewish cemetery in the region.

The Jewish section of the Szczecin Central Cemetery is a separate part of the necropolis intended for followers of Judaism. It is the only active Jewish cemetery in the West Pomeranian Voivodeship.

How the section came about

The section was established in 1962, after the old Jewish cemetery on Ojca Beyzyma Street was closed. The city authorities refused at that time to allow a new cemetery on a separate plot. The first burial took place in 1962. The section also contains older graves from 1946-1962, exhumed from the old cemetery.

What is on site

The section covers about 0.25 ha. About 150 gravestones of marble, granite, sandstone and other stones stand on it, with inscriptions in Polish, Hebrew and Yiddish. Those buried here include activists of the Jewish community, a physician and professor of the Pomeranian Medical Academy, and a professor of the University of Szczecin.

Practical information

  • The section lies within the Szczecin Central Cemetery, in the Gumieńce district. The cemetery itself is described under Szczecin Central Cemetery.
  • The section is managed by the Jewish Religious Community in Szczecin. Check the rules of entry and conduct in the section with the manager.
  • This is a place of burial and remembrance, to be visited in silence.
