The largest public library in Central Pomerania, in a building opened in 1973, with exhibitions and author meetings.
The Joachim Lelewel Public Library in Koszalin is the largest public library in Central Pomerania. Its main seat is in the building at Polonii Square 1, opened in 1973.
Construction of the new building began in 1967, and the official opening took place on 12 September 1973. The library was then named after Joachim Lelewel, historian and librarian. About 250,000 volumes were moved to the new building from Wolności Square and Dworcowa Street. The library itself descends from the Municipal Public Library opened in Koszalin on 15 June 1947.
According to the library's website, exhibitions, vernissages, author meetings and film screenings are held here, and the programme changes regularly. The collection has 400,000 book items, a media library with discs and audiobooks, and periodicals. The main building mostly holds academic and popular-science collections, and the branches mainly fiction. Close by lies the Museum in Koszalin.
