Library in a historic townhouse of the 15th and 16th centuries, rebuilt in 1973, with a programme of meetings and exhibitions.
Książnica Stargardzka, the municipal library, has its seat in a historic townhouse at Mieszka I 1, known as the House of Rohleder, Kletzin or Kletzan. The library's website describes it as a restored burgher townhouse from the mid-16th century and one of the most beautiful in Stargard. The building is listed in the heritage register (no. A-1477 of 10 November 1990).
The oldest part was built in the 15th century as a service wing of an older house that has not survived. In the following century a stone-and-brick main building with Renaissance features was added to it, with a stepped gable characteristic of Hanseatic towns. In 1945 the west wall, the façade and the vault of the main building burnt down. The decision to rebuild was taken in 1967. Work was completed in 1973, a pavilion was added then, and the new premises were opened on 22 September 1973.
The library runs a cultural programme: author meetings, exhibitions, lectures, podcasts, board game meetings, film screenings and recurring events. For organised groups librarians give tours of the departments and the book collection, with bookings by the telephone number given on the library's website.
