Small lake Zgniły Grzyb in the Beech Forest with two early medieval strongholds and an ecological site.
Grzybno, also called Zgniły Grzyb, is a small lake on the Wełtyń Plain in Gryfino municipality. It has an area of about 10 hectares, a length of 400 metres and a width of 190 metres. It lies within the boundaries of the Szczecin Landscape Park “Puszcza Bukowa”.
On the south shore, near where a watercourse flows out of the lake, there are two early medieval strongholds. Closer to the lake lies an extensive horseshoe-shaped stronghold with a rampart that is hard to see today, and a hundred metres further on a conical stronghold, 42.7 metres above sea level. Wikipedia assumes that it was the seat of the powerful Świętoborzyc family, rulers of the Kołbacz and Pyrzyce lands.
The lake is surrounded by reeds, meadows, pastures and pine and alder woods. In 1995 the Zgniły Grzyb ecological site, with an area of 50.25 hectares, was established here, covering the lake and the source area of the Krzekna River. Numerous legends are linked with the lake. Along the east shore, by the Drogą Czterech Podków (Four Horseshoes Road), runs the Warrior Żelisław Trail.
From the other lake in the area, Glinna Wielka, a tributary flows out which, together with the watercourse from Grzybno, forms the Krzekna.
