Theatre at the Castle of the Pomeranian Dukes, formed in 2015 by merging the Krypta Theatre and the Piwnica przy Krypcie cabaret.
The Piwnica przy Krypcie Theatre operates at the Castle of the Pomeranian Dukes in Szczecin. It was formed in 2015 by merging two castle stages: the drama Krypta Theatre and the Piwnica przy Krypcie cabaret.
The Krypta Theatre has existed since 1965 and was housed in the Griffin crypt at the castle. The ducal crypt was discovered in 1946, and at the start of the 1960s it was assigned to cultural use. The theatre had no permanent company: actors from Szczecin theatres performed in it, and the small auditorium limited the repertoire to small forms. The Piwnica przy Krypcie cabaret was founded in 1990 on the initiative of the city's actors and artists and ran cabaret evenings, concerts, recitals, literary meetings, exhibition openings and poetry slams.
The Castle describes the theatre's offer as performances for children, focused on education and developing the imagination, and performances for adults. From May 2017 to November 2025, because of a building failure at the castle, the theatre temporarily performed in the cinema hall.
