About Statue of Flora in Szczecin

Baroque sculpture of Flora with sandstone putti, formerly on the attic of the Grumbkow Palace, in White Eagle Square since 1991.

The Statue of Flora stands in White Eagle Square in Szczecin. It is a baroque figural group made of Saxon sandstone: the Roman goddess of abundance and spring holds a basket of flowers, with two putti on either side of her.

Author and history of the figure

The sculpture was made by Johann Georg Glume to a design by Johann Konrad Koch, around 1730. Some sources point to the 1780s. One of the putti climbs a cornucopia, the other arranges flowers in a basket. The group originally crowned the attic of the Grumbkow Palace, that is the Palace Under the Globe, then moved to the palace garden, and in 1906 to Stefan Żeromski Park as a decoration of the Park House.

After the war

In autumn 1945 the figure was found among the rubble in the courtyard of the museum on Staromłyńska Street, without its head, arms and cupids. After restoration in 1953 it was placed at the edge of Stefan Żeromski Park, in the 1970s it was moved to the vicinity of the Royal Gate, and it reached White Eagle Square in 1991, after thorough conservation.
