About Soviet Cemetery in Borne Sulinowo

Soviet military cemetery in a forest near Borne Sulinowo, with 344 graves, no longer in use since the base closed in 1992.

The military cemetery lies in a forest near Borne Sulinowo. It was established in 1945, after the Soviet military base was set up, and operated until the base was closed in 1992.

Who lies here

The cemetery has 344 graves, including 146 people whose identities have not been established. Buried here were soldiers and civilians connected with the local 6th Vitebsk-Novgorod Guards Mechanised Division, including family members, who died during service in the garrison, as well as soldiers from the Soviet garrison in Szczecinek. In 2007 remains from the Soviet military cemeteries being closed in Kołobrzeg and Białogard were moved here. After 1970 burials of adults ceased, and only children of the families of the base personnel were buried here.

Today

The cemetery is not in use, but remains in the care of the local authorities. The monument to Ivan Poddubny, a twenty-year-old private who died in 1946, was moved to it from the town centre; it is known as the “monument with the submachine gun”. In November 2018 an Orthodox cross was set up and blessed here.
