Sanctuary of Our Lady Immaculate in Resko

Bohaterów Monte Cassino 12, Resko
About Sanctuary of Our Lady Immaculate in Resko

Late Gothic church from around 1400, a sanctuary since 1993, with an 18th-century painting of Our Lady Immaculate.

The Sanctuary of Our Lady Immaculate in Resko is housed in a late Gothic parish church from around 1400, in the town centre, north of the Rega River. The Marian sanctuary was established there on 25 March 1993, and the venerated image is the painting of Our Lady of Resko.

History of the church

The church was extended at the end of the 15th century and rebuilt in 1697 and 1882, after several fires. In 1881 the tower was raised to 66 metres, and the largest fire struck the building in 1916. From 1534 to 1945 the church belonged to the Protestants. After the war it was consecrated on 15 June 1945. The church is entered in the heritage register.

Interior and painting

The church is a three-aisled hall church of the Gryfice hall type. After a lightning strike in early 1970 the tower is 61 metres tall. Inside are a 17th-century altar, an 18th-century organ gallery and neo-Gothic polychromes from 1881-1882. The painting of Our Lady Immaculate, an 18th-century work by an unknown artist measuring 145 by 85 cm, was moved after the war from the convent of the Borromean Sisters in Święciechowa. Pilgrims sign the pilgrims' book or leave votive offerings. Beside the church grows the John Paul II oak, commemorated with a boulder and a plaque.

Close to the church, about 200 metres away, stand the castle ruins.
