A shrine in the Słoneczne housing estate with a figure of Our Lady of Fátima crowned by John Paul II in 1987.
The Shrine of Our Lady of Fátima is a modern church in the Słoneczne housing estate, built in 1987-1988 as a votive offering for the saving of the life of John Paul II. At its centre is the figure of Our Lady of Fátima, which the Pope crowned in Szczecin during his pilgrimage in 1987.
The religious complex, that is, the church, the chapel and the residential and catechetical buildings, was designed by Adam Szymski and Marian Rozwarski. The construction was led by Father Jan Cichy, parish priest from 1985. The chapel was built first, and the whole shrine was consecrated by the Bishop of Szczecin-Kamień, Kazimierz Majdański, on 15 August 1988.
The object of veneration is a wooden figure 120 cm high, made in Fátima, with a gilded crown. It is a gift from the Marian movement from France and the United States known as the Blue Army of Mary. The figure was collected in Fátima in October 1985, and in Rome it was blessed by John Paul II. It was enthroned in Szczecin on 1 January 1986.
The coronation took place on 11 June 1987 at Jasne Błonia (the Bright Meadows) during John Paul II's third pilgrimage to Poland. According to the Wikipedia entry it was the first coronation of a Fátima figure in Poland. The figure was put on permanent display in the shrine on 15 August 1988.
The marble altar, the bronze altar piece on the theme of the five mysteries of the Rosary and the mandorla around the Madonna were designed by Czesław Dźwigaj of Kraków. The stained glass by the Szczecin artist Bruno Tode depicts scenes connected with the Fátima apparitions. The shrine also holds votive offerings given by John Paul II: a zucchetto and a rosary from 2003.
