Rhapsodic theatre operating since 1959 in a historic tenement house at Grodzka 3 in Koszalin, known as the Hangman's House.
The Henryka Rodkiewicz Proposals Theatre “Dialog” is a rhapsodic theatre that has operated in Koszalin since 1959. Since 1964 it has been based at Grodzka 3, in a historic tenement house known as the Hangman's House.
The building is listed in the heritage register, and its brick walls are several hundred years old. The sources date the tenement house differently: the heritage register gives the 17th century, while the theatre's description points to the 15th century and the year 1464, from which the town hangman lived here. Hence the colloquial name Hangman's House.
The company was founded in August 1959 by the actress Henryka Rodkiewicz together with a group of theatre enthusiasts, initially as a poetry theatre. The first production was “Godzina myśli” (An Hour of Thought) based on Juliusz Słowacki, and the company took the name “Dialog” in 1960. The theatre won awards at the national festival of amateur poetry theatres, and devoted many productions to the work of Cyprian Kamil Norwid.
The building has a theatre stage, a poetry stage and a music stage, and also hosts poetry evenings, author meetings and concerts within a music club. Together with other institutions the theatre organises the review of debut monodramas “Strzała Północy” (Arrow of the North). The tenement house stands near the cathedral and the former synagogue.
