The brick building of the former Prussian Staatsarchiv, opened in 1901 and entered in the heritage register in 1980, still the seat of the State Archive.
The State Archive in Szczecin is housed in a brick building at ul. św. Wojciecha 13, on the corner of Jagiellońska and św. Wojciecha streets. The building was put into use in 1901 as the seat of the Prussian archive, the Staatsarchiv Stettin. It is a working institution, so it is easiest to view from outside.
The new building was financed by the central Prussian authorities at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. In 1945 the building was taken over by the Polish archive together with part of the prewar holdings. The building suffered relatively little during the war; only the roof of the administrative part was damaged. In 1980 the whole complex at ul. św. Wojciecha 13 was entered in the heritage register. The register gives brick as the material and dates the building to 1900.
The archive in Szczecin was formally established in 1831, at first in the former ducal castle, that is, in the Castle of the Pomeranian Dukes. It then took over the files of the government district, courts and foundations, and church records. Its own building allowed the archivists to do wider work and to take over a large number of historical records from the territory of Pomerania.
The oldest records date from the second half of the 13th century and show the changing state affiliation of West Pomerania, from the Griffins through Brandenburg, Swedish and Prussian rule to Polish times. Materials from the period up to 1945 occupy more than 4 km of shelving, and later ones more than 10 km. The archive also has branches in Stargard and Międzyzdroje.
The archive's website announces occasional exhibitions and archive lessons for schools. The collections are made available in a reading room, whose rules are given by the archive on its website.
About half a kilometre away stands the Royal Gate.
Not far away is also the Archcathedral Basilica of St James the Apostle.
