About Bethanien Institution Cemetery in Szczecin

A former hospital cemetery from around 1871, of which a Classicist chapel and a wooded area have survived.

The Bethanien Institution Cemetery in Szczecin is a former hospital cemetery, established around 1871 for a care and hospital complex for the elderly. The institution was run by a Protestant congregation of deaconess sisters, and its founder was Johannes Quistorp.

History of the cemetery

The cemetery was located at the end of the hospital park, between today's Fr Piotr Wawrzyniak Street and Adam Mickiewicz Street. The deceased residents and the sisters serving in the institution were buried here. The founder of the institution was also buried here, in 1899, as was his son Martin Quistorp, who died in 1929 and was one of the last people buried here.

After 1945

The Bethanien institution was closed in 1945, and the cemetery grounds were levelled around 1960. Ash, maple, thuja, lime and Douglas fir trees grow on them. A Classicist cemetery chapel from the 19th century has survived and has been renovated.

Practical information

  • Location: Szczecin, Łękno district, between Fr Piotr Wawrzyniak Street and Adam Mickiewicz Street.
  • The gravestones are no longer there; a chapel stands on the site and a stand of trees grows. Whether the grounds and the interior of the chapel can be entered should be checked with the manager.
