Church of Divine Mercy in Trzęsacz

Pałacowa 3, Trzęsacz
About Church of Divine Mercy in Trzęsacz

A brick church from 1880 built after the closure of a church threatened by the cliff, rebuilt in 2003, with a Baroque altar from 1673.

The Church of Divine Mercy in Trzęsacz stands on the south side of provincial road no. 102. It is much less well known than the older church whose ruins lie in this village by the cliff. The brick building from 1880 was built as a replacement, and after war damage it was rebuilt in 2003. It is entered in the heritage register.

A new church instead of one threatened by the cliff

The decision to build a new church was taken after the closure of the medieval church, which was threatened with sliding into the sea. The cliff was retreating, so the shoreline kept getting closer to the church. The last service in the old church took place on 2 March 1874, and the new one was completed in 1880. What remains of the old church by the cliff is the ruins of the church in Trzęsacz, about four hundred metres from the new church.

The new church is a brick building in the Historicist style, with Gothic and Romanesque elements. It had a tower with a slender spire and two bells moved from the old church, a nave with galleries and a chancel with a three-sided end. The heritage register describes the style as eclectic.

Ruin and rebuilding

Until 1945 the church served Protestants. During the war it was lightly damaged, but the Polish authorities decided to demolish it. Officially this was for bricks for the rebuilding of Warsaw, but according to the Wikipedia entry the main reasons were ideological. Only the wall around the church and parts of the walls were pulled down, and the church survived as a ruin almost until the end of the 20th century. Rebuilding began on 4 May 1998, and on 4 May 2003 the church was solemnly consecrated. It forms part of the Educational Centre of the Szczecin-Kamień Archdiocese.

An altar and a font from old churches

The most valuable item is the Early Baroque high altar from 1673, made by Martin Edelber and Joachim Sellin of Wolin. It originally stood in the Gothic church in Trzęsacz, after its closure it went to the cathedral in Kamień Pomorski, and it returned to Trzęsacz in 2003. The retable shows a scene of the Crucifixion, and the predella the Last Supper with apostles resembling in appearance the Swedes of the time, who then ruled Pomerania.

In the chancel also stands a Baroque hexagonal font from 1682, originally intended for the church in Dobropole, which for many years was in the Szczecin archcathedral basilica. The contemporary stained-glass windows show saints and blessed persons associated with science, education and upbringing. The church has a contemporary organ with 18 stops, and every summer the International Music Festival "Sacrum Non Profanum" is held in it.

Nearby

By the cliff, about three hundred metres from the church, is the Multimedia Museum on the Cliff.

About one and a half kilometres from the church stands the Baltic Cross of Hope.
