Długa, Kartno
About Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Kartno

A 13th-century church of dressed granite, a ruin after the war, rebuilt in 1981-1984, with a stone wall and a medieval cemetery gate.

The Church of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross in Kartno, in Stare Czarnowo municipality, was built in the second half of the 13th century of dressed granite. After the Second World War it fell into ruin, but it was rebuilt. Today it is a working filial church of the parish in Gardno.

The building

It is a hall church without a tower, on a rectangular plan, ending in an apse added later. It has two entrance portals: one with three steps on the west and one with two steps on the north. In the east wall there is a trace of a walled-up large Gothic window, today partly hidden by the apse. The west gable is decorated with pointed brick arcades, and the jambs are built of brick.

Rebuilding

The church was rebuilt in 1981-1984, and on 4 November 1984 it was blessed by Bishop Kazimierz Majdański. The interior is covered with a wooden ceiling; the historic furnishings have not survived.

Cemetery

A cemetery enclosed by a stone wall adjoins the church, and the wall contains a medieval gate.

Nearby

Nearby lie the Źródliskowa Buczyna nature reserve and the arboretum in Glinna.

Practical information

  • Service times and access to the interior are given by the parish, because the church is not a museum with fixed visiting hours.
