A Gothic church with Baroque elements in Mechowo, with a wooden tower of 1647, an altar from the early 18th century and stained glass with family coats of arms.
The Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Mechowo (Golczewo municipality, Kamień County) was probably built in the second half of the 15th century. It stands on a small moraine rise sloping down to the Wołcza River and is entered in the heritage register.
The original church had a rectangular plan. In 1647 a wooden tower was added to its west wall. The rebuilding design of 1777 provided for a rectangular chapel on the east, with a patron’s gallery. The von Grapen family is also said to have added its burial vault there. In 1906-1907 a thorough renovation was carried out. Catholics blessed the church on 20 June 1946, and the chapel was then converted into a sacristy. An independent parish was established in 1985.
The body of stone and brick is now entirely plastered. The tower narrows towards the top, has an octagonal bell turret and a conical spire. Inside, the ceiling is beamed, and the altar and pulpit date from the early 18th century and come from a Pomeranian workshop. The two-storey, columned altar is dated to 1700 or 1709. The central painting shows the Crucified Christ with Mary, St John and Mary Magdalene, and the predella holds the Last Supper. The pulpit of 1712 was founded by the von Grapen family together with the municipal administrators and the pastor. Eight of the fourteen stained-glass windows in the south windows have survived, among them a window with the von Grapen coat of arms of 1706.
Nearby stands the Church of St Joseph in Rybokarty, and a few kilometres further the palace in Rybokarty.
