About Oświęcimski Cemetery in Szczecin

Former municipal cemetery from around 1820, a park since about 1980, with the entrance gate preserved.

The Oświęcimski Cemetery, until 1945 the Neuer Grabower Friedhof, was a municipal cemetery in Szczecin's Niemierzyn district, between Niemierzyńska Street and the railway line. It was laid out around 1820 as a burial ground for the village of Niemierzyn. At the end of the 19th century, when space ran short, it was extended to the south-east, and at the beginning of the 20th century school buildings were put up on the site of the oldest plots.

After 1945 the cemetery was not widely used, and in 1949 the 19th-century funeral chapel was designated for demolition. In 1976-1977, because of progressive devastation, the gravestones were removed, and around 1980 the site was turned into a town park. The Polish name Cmentarz Oświęcimski was given after the war.

Of the former necropolis the entrance gate on the Niemierzyńska Street side has survived, next to the secondary school building. In the park grow fine horse chestnuts, the most numerous tree species here.
