About Jewish cemeteries in Szczecin

A former Jewish cemetery from 1821, closed down in 1982, and the Jewish section of the Central Cemetery.

The entry on Jewish cemeteries in Szczecin covers two places: the former cemetery by Ojca Beyzyma, Gorkiego and Soplicy streets, and the Jewish section of the Central Cemetery. The first no longer exists as a cemetery, and a park with a monument now occupies its site. The second is an active section, to which the remains were moved in 1982.

The former cemetery on Ojca Beyzyma Street

The cemetery was founded in 1821 and at first covered 173 m². It was enlarged several times, among others in 1877, 1891 and 1917, until it took in the area along today's Soplicy and Ojca Beyzyma streets. In 1899 a pre-burial house was built. In 1938, during Kristallnacht, the pre-burial house was burned down and the cemetery was desecrated. During the Second World War the cemetery itself was not damaged.

From May 1946 burials were organised by the Polish Jewish community. In 1962 the cemetery was closed, and in 1982 the gravestones were removed and the remains were exhumed and moved to a separate section of the Central Cemetery. In 1988 a monument designed by Zbigniew Abrahamowicz, documenting the past of the place, was unveiled on the site of the former cemetery, now a park.

The section at the Central Cemetery

In 1962 a Jewish section, numbered 62, was created at the Central Cemetery. It covers 0.25 hectares and holds about 150 gravestones.
