Historic townhouses on plac Żołnierza Polskiego, former houses of canons and of professors of the Szczecin Pedagogium, with Gothic cellars.
The Professors' Houses (Domki Profesorskie) are a row of townhouses at plac Żołnierza Polskiego 6-11 and Mariacka 26, which originally belonged to the complex of the Collegiate Church of St Mary. They stand in the very heart of the Old Town, right next to the Royal Gate, and are one of the less obvious stops on a walk through this part of Szczecin.
In the Middle Ages the canons of the collegiate chapter lived here. After the Reformation the buildings were occupied by professors of the Ducal Pedagogium in Szczecin, and the present name comes from them. The German name of the complex, Prediger- und Professorenhäuser, also points to preachers.
At first the small townhouses faced the other way than they do now: their facades towards the church, because a few metres behind the buildings ran the town wall. The King of Prussia, Frederick William I, ordered on 19 July 1739 the rebuilding of the buildings adjoining the southern side of the White Parade Square. After the rebuilding the former rear walls became the fronts. In 1831 two buildings at the corner with Mariacka Street were remodelled again, and a hundred years later one of them was demolished.
The houses survived the Second World War. Thorough renovations were carried out in 1964-1969. Under part of the buildings Gothic cellars of the 15th century with cross-ribbed vaults have survived, in which a food and drink venue now operates. The complex was entered in the heritage register in 1954.
The buildings are viewed from outside, from the square and Mariacka Street. The interiors are commercial and residential premises, not a museum, so there is no ticketed visiting here.
