Jewish Cemetery in Banie

Banie
About Jewish Cemetery in Banie

A historic Jewish cemetery with a few surviving gravestones, including one from 1741, and fragments of matzevot.

The Jewish cemetery in Banie is near the place where Ogrodowa Street joins Brzozowa Street, between Lake Mostowe and the former cement factory. It is entered in the heritage register. A few gravestones have survived there.

History of the cemetery

According to the Wikipedia entry, the cemetery was established in the 18th century, while the heritage register dates it to the first half of the 19th century. Most of the gravestones were made of black marble with gold inscriptions, and the site was surrounded by a low wall and tall trees. The cemetery was devastated during Kristallnacht and later in the period of the Polish People's Republic.

What has survived

Three gravestones have survived to this day: the oldest from 1741, a second with a Hebrew inscription and a concrete one with an inscription in German. There are also the remains of several sandstone matzevot (Jewish gravestones). The Wikipedia entry mentions a planned memorial plaque at the entrance, with an inscription in Polish, English and German; whether it has been put up has to be checked on site.
