Jewish Cemetery in Cedynia

Tadeusza Kościuszki, Cedynia
About Jewish Cemetery in Cedynia

A historic Jewish cemetery with seven matzevot that were found and set up again.

The Jewish cemetery in Cedynia lies near Kościuszki Street and is entered in the heritage register. Today seven matzevot (Jewish gravestones) that were found and set up again stand on its site.

History of the cemetery

The cemetery was probably established in the first half of the 19th century, and the heritage register dates it to the 18th century. It survived the period of the Third Reich in fairly good condition, but in the time of the Polish People's Republic it was forgotten and fell into decay. Anthropologists from Poznań, who carried out research here, removed some of the matzevot.

The matzevot today

Through the efforts of local activists, seven matzevot were found and set up. According to the Wikipedia entry, they lack elements typical of Jewish sepulchral art. The entry in the heritage register dates from 2002.
