Jewish Cemetery in Nowe Warpno

Nowe Warpno
About Jewish Cemetery in Nowe Warpno

A former Jewish cemetery from the mid-19th century in Podgrodzie, where two matzevot have survived, incorporated after the war into the grounds of a Christian cemetery.

The Jewish cemetery in Nowe Warpno lies in the Podgrodzie district, on a rise at the fork of Wojska Polskiego and Podgrodzie streets, at the address Wojska Polskiego 26. Two matzevot have survived from it to this day.

History of the cemetery

The Jewish cemetery (kirkut) was probably founded in the mid-19th century. It was small and adjoined Protestant cemeteries. It was used by a small community, numbering at most a dozen or so people, without the status of an independent community: the Jews of Nowe Warpno belonged to the community in Ueckermünde, 22 kilometres away. The cemetery may have gone out of use as early as the interwar period.

Present condition

Immediately after the Second World War the site was incorporated into the grounds of the Christian cemetery, which was used by military settlers and then civilian ones, in 1947-1959. In the area of the former Jewish cemetery, to the right of the gate, stand crosses from the neighbouring burials, which is easy to mistake. At least two matzevot have survived, set very deep in the ground. In front of the entrance is an information board. The cemetery is a place of remembrance, so the conduct due to a resting place is expected there.
