About Monument to the Inhabitants of Maszewo Who Fell in the First World War

Modernist brick monument of 1926 on the outskirts of Maszewo, restored in 1993.

The Monument to the Inhabitants of Maszewo Who Fell in the First World War is a brick structure of 1926, set up on the far outskirts of the town. It stands out for its form and scale among monuments of this type in West Pomerania.

History and form

In Germany a monument to the victims of the First World War was put up in almost every village, usually a modest obelisk in the centre of the settlement. The one in Maszewo is different: it was created on the initiative of the then Town Council, on a large scale for a town of about 3,000 inhabitants, and it has no plaques with the names of the fallen. After the war it fell into ruin, and in 1993 it was restored with the participation of the German side.

The modernist structure has the shape of the letter “U”, without a roof. The semicircular end is cut through by an opening in the shape of a raised sword. The walls of unplastered brick, laid decoratively, are crowned with a false crenellation. After the renovation two plaques, Polish and German, were placed on the walls.
