Guardhouse in Stargard

Rynek Staromiejski 3, Stargard
About Guardhouse in Stargard

Baroque guardhouse of the early 18th century by the town hall on the Stargard Market Square, rebuilt after the destruction of 1945, now joined to the neighbouring house and used as a museum.

The guardhouse in Stargard is a historic guardhouse building standing directly south of the town hall and projecting to the west in front of its façade. It was built in the early 1720s as a Baroque building with arcaded porticoes on the ground floor, a covered gallery on the upper floor and a mansard roof. The heritage register confirms the dating to the early 18th century and the brick material.

What it was used for

The guardhouse was the main guardroom of the Stargard garrison. In 1886 it was bought by the town. The building underwent extensive renovation in 1900 and 1934, and in the 20th century it served as a library. Smaller than the town hall and the neighbouring tenement houses, it enlivens with its façade divisions the market frontage, which is dominated by the towers of the collegiate church.

Reconstruction after 1945

After the fighting for the town in 1945 only the perimeter walls and part of the arcades up to ground-floor height remained of the guardhouse. The exterior was faithfully recreated, and the interiors were joined to the neighbouring house and adapted for museum use. Today this complex houses the Archaeological and Historical Museum.
