About Palace in Konarzewo

A palace from the 18th century, rebuilt in 1869, in Konarzewo (formerly Kniephof), where Otto von Bismarck spent his youth.

The palace complex in Konarzewo, a settlement belonging to the village of Żabówko in Nowogard municipality, is connected with the youth of Otto von Bismarck. The palace dates from the fourth quarter of the 18th century, and it was rebuilt in 1869 and at the beginning of the 20th century. The former German name of the settlement was Kniephof.

Konarzewo and Bismarck

For several hundred years the settlement belonged to the Pomeranian von Dewitz family, and in 1726-1945 to the von Bismarck family. From 1816 Otto von Bismarck, later Chancellor of the German Empire, stayed here with breaks for his studies. He managed the whole estates in 1838-1844, and after 1845 only Konarzewo, which in 1868 he sold to his nephew Philipp von Bismarck. In 1908 a street in the Berlin district of Steglitz was named after Kniephof.

The complex

The complex consists of a palace and a park from the 18th and 19th centuries. The heritage register lists the site as a manor complex, without a date, and the entries date from 1996 and 2014. Nearby lie the churches in Maszkowo and Jarchlino, among them St Stanislaus Kostka's Church in Maszkowo (about 2.4 km).
