About St George's Chapel in Trzebiatów

Gothic chapel of a leper hospital in Trzebiatów, rebuilt as a residential house from the 19th century.

St George's Chapel in Trzebiatów is a Gothic hospital chapel at ul. Kołobrzeska 6. It was founded for a leper hospital, and since the 19th century, after being rebuilt, it has served as a residential house. It is one of three surviving Gothic hospital chapels in the town.

A chapel outside the town walls

According to the Wikipedia entry, the chapel was founded by the town council in the 14th century for the needs of a leper hospital. The heritage register dates it to the end of the 15th century, and the building is of brick. Because of its function it stood outside the walls, in the suburb, by the road from Trzebiatów to Kołobrzeg, while the other two almshouses lay within the fortifications.

From almshouse to tenement house

During the Reformation the chapel was turned into a home for the poor, and in the 19th century it was rebuilt as a rental tenement house. Today it is a residential building, so it can be viewed from the street. The town's other hospital chapels are St Gertrude's Chapel and the Chapel of the Holy Spirit.
