About Szczecin Paprykarz Monument

An installation shaped like an open tin of Szczecin paprykarz on Gryfitów Square, unveiled on 2 October 2020.

The Szczecin Paprykarz Monument stands on Gryfitów Square in Szczecin. It is an installation showing a partly opened tin of the preserve that began rolling off the production line in 1967. The tin shows elements of the label, including the list of ingredients.

Where it comes from

The installation was designed by Bogusław Dydek, and the idea came from the company Gryf Nieruchomości, heir to the tradition of the Deep-Sea Fishing and Fishery Services Enterprise "Gryf", which produced the paprykarz. The monument was unveiled on 2 October 2020. Two former employees of the enterprise, Teresa Szczęsna and Helena Kamińska-Wiśniewska, took part in the ceremony.

Removal and return

Two months after the unveiling the monument disappeared from the square. The square belongs to the former municipal slaughterhouse complex, which is on the heritage register, and putting up such an installation requires the consent of the city conservator of monuments, which no one had applied for. The company applied for the monument to be restored, and in summer 2021 it returned to the square. The conservator agreed only to a temporary installation, not permanently attached to the ground.
