Drama theatre in Szczecin founded in 1946, in a historic building of about 1920, with a new part opened in 2023.
The Polish Theatre in Szczecin is a drama theatre founded in 1946. It is housed at Swarożyca 5 in Drzetowo-Grabowo, in a historic building to which in 2023 a new building was added on the Oder side.
The building was designed around 1920 by Adolf Thesmacher as the seat of a Masonic lodge. In 1935-1937 it was rebuilt for the women's organisation of the NSDAP. In 1945 and 1946 films were shown in it, concerts were held, and even boxing matches. Since 1946 it has been the seat of the theatre. Renovations in the second half of the 20th century reduced the main hall from 700 seats to 325, and in 2008 the auditorium was renewed.
The renovation combined with an extension began in April 2020. The design was prepared by the studio Atelier Loegler Architekci, and the construction was carried out by Budimex. In the new part, in the escarpment above the Oder, three stages were created: the Shakespearean, the Italian and the Chamber stage. In the historic building the Jan Banucha Stage and the Cabaret Stage operate. The first performance in the new interiors was given on 3 August 2023, and the official opening took place on 6 August 2023.
Since February 1997 the theatre has had the cabaret stage “Czarny Kot Rudy”, with monologues, sketches and songs. On the large stage classics have been performed, among them Goethe's “Faust”, Bulgakov's “The Master and Margarita” and Ibsen's “Peer Gynt”.
