Theatre in Szczecin and West Pomerania means dozens of stages: Opera na Zamku, Teatr Współczesny, Adria in Koszalin and community venues in smaller towns.

Here you can choose an evening at the theatre, whether in Szczecin, in Koszalin or in a town they happen to be visiting. The calendar covers the whole region, so alongside the large stages you will also find halls in county culture centres.

Where can you see theatre in Szczecin?

Two institutions in the Old Town carry most of the theatre in Szczecin: Opera na Zamku (the Opera at the Castle) and Teatr Współczesny (the Contemporary Theatre). Culture centres add smaller stages, and in summer there is an open-air amphitheatre.

Opera na Zamku sits in the south wing of the ducal castle, and the company has its own orchestra, choir and ballet. Its repertoire includes opera, ballet and concerts, which makes it the address for anyone who wants a staged show with live music. The company has been active since 1956 and is run by the West Pomeranian regional government.

Teatr Współczesny occupies the National Museum building on Wały Chrobrego (Chrobry Embankment). It has a Main Stage and the Nowe Sytuacje stage there, while its second venue, Teatr Mały (the Small Theatre), stands on Deptak Bogusława. Drama and less conventional theatre therefore share a neighbourhood with the museum and the terrace above the Oder, so an evening show is easy to combine with an earlier walk.

The buildings of the city's stages are covered in the article Stages of Szczecin: the Philharmonic and the theatres of the city centre. According to its sources, the Philharmonic from 2014 and the theatres in the castle, on the Embankment and by Plac Teatralny are the city's main stage addresses.

Smaller stages in Szczecin

Besides the two large institutions, theatre also appears in the calendar on stages run by culture centres. NOWA DEKADENCJA Szczecińskie Centrum Kultury (Scena Dekadencja) is one of the venues with many calendar entries, and single performances turn up at the Amphitheatre - Summer Theatre (Amfiteatr - Teatr Letni) and at Willa Lentza. The amphitheatre suits warm evenings, since performances are held in the open air.

What theatre is on in Koszalin?

Koszalin is the region's second theatre centre after Szczecin, with not many fewer performances in the calendar than the voivodeship capital. It has several stages of different character, from a drama theatre to a musical theatre and a variety stage.

Bałtycki Teatr Dramatyczny (the Baltic Drama Theatre) is the Koszalin stage with the most events, and the calendar also lists its back stage separately. Teatr Muzyczny ADRIA at ul. Grunwaldzka 8-10 is a private theatre that opened in 2020 in the building of a former cinema of the same name. The hall seats about 300, and the theatre calls itself the first musical theatre of the city and the region.

A lighter evening is on offer at Teatr Variete Muza, while in summer the Amfiteatr hosts concerts and shows outdoors. Large productions and events also take place in the Hala Widowiskowo-Sportowa (the sports and entertainment hall). All Koszalin listings are collected in Theatre: Koszalin, and the full city calendar is under events in Koszalin.

Where can you see a play in the smaller towns?

Outside Szczecin and Koszalin, theatre is mostly staged by culture centres and municipal venues. They usually have no company of their own and host touring productions, so what is on depends on who happens to be on the road.

In Stargard, performances appear at the Stargardzkie Centrum Kultury (Stargard Culture Centre), and the Stargard listings are on Theatre: Stargard. Świnoujście has a theatre hall in its municipal culture centre, the Sala Teatralna MDK, with events on Theatre: Świnoujście. In Szczecinek the venue is SAPIK Sala Kina Wolność, a sign that in many towns one hall serves both cinema and stage; the full list is on Theatre: Szczecinek.

Kołobrzeg relies on the Regionalne Centrum Kultury, and its theatre entries are gathered in Theatre: Kołobrzeg. Wałcz has the Wałeckie Centrum Kultury, Gryfice the Gryficki Dom Kultury and Pyrzyce the Pyrzycki Dom Kultury. On the coast in Mielno there is Frajda Scena Mielno, handy for anyone on a seaside holiday.

How do you choose a town so the trip is not wasted?

Most performances are in Szczecin and Koszalin, a handful each in Stargard, Świnoujście, Szczecinek and Kołobrzeg, and single entries elsewhere. If you are travelling specifically for theatre, pick one of the two largest centres.

In smaller towns the reverse strategy works: see what is on in the place where you already are. Złocieniec has two halls, Ośrodek Kultury and Złocieniecki Ośrodek Kultury; Goleniów has the Goleniowski Dom Kultury, Choszczno the Choszczeński Dom Kultury, Białogard the Centrum Kultury i Spotkań Europejskich and Dębno the Dębnowski Ośrodek Kultury. For a trip with an overnight stay, the Music section is also useful, because many theatre evenings share halls with concerts. If you prefer laughter to drama, look at Cabaret.

How do you use the calendar and buy a ticket?

Two filters narrow the list: day and category. Tickets are bought from the event's own page, without leaving the portal. The day filter helps when you plan an evening ahead, the category filter when you want to compare theatre with other forms.

If theatre is to be part of a longer day out, check the Cinema category, which covers several smaller towns, and in Szczecin look for combinations with sightseeing in the Old Town.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the theatre in Szczecin?

The two main institutions are in the Old Town. Opera na Zamku is in the south wing of the ducal castle, and Teatr Współczesny is inside the National Museum on the Chrobry Embankment. Its second stage, Teatr Mały, is on Deptak Bogusława.

Is there an opera in Szczecin?

Yes. Opera na Zamku performs in the castle and keeps an orchestra, choir and ballet. Its repertoire includes opera, ballet and concerts.

Where can you see theatre outside Szczecin?

After Szczecin, Koszalin has the most theatre events, including at the Bałtycki Teatr Dramatyczny and Teatr Muzyczny ADRIA. Smaller entries appear in Stargard, Świnoujście, Szczecinek and Kołobrzeg.

Do theatres in small towns have a permanent company?

The calendar data only shows that performances take place in culture centres and municipal venues. What is on depends on the dates of touring productions, so it is worth checking the calendar of the given town.

Can you buy a ticket through the portal?

Yes, tickets are bought from the event's own page.
