Historic ducal stables of about 1600 beside the Ducal Castle in Szczecin, with a Renaissance portal and a former hoist.
The Ducal Stables stand at Rycerska 3, right next to the Ducal Castle (the Castle of the Pomeranian Dukes). It is a half-timbered building of about 1600, entered in the heritage register. It formerly served the ducal court as the farm buildings of the castle.
On the upper floor there was a store for fodder, that is, feed for the horses. The lower part was a stable and a riding school. The building is 32 metres long and 12 metres wide. The former hoist, with which hay and straw were hauled up, has also survived.
On the east wall there is an incomplete Renaissance portal from the first half of the 17th century. In 1736 it was moved here from the castle buildings. At the bottom it has niche shells, above them reliefs with two Pomeranian coats of arms, the coat of arms of Schleswig-Holstein and a griffin with a book and a sword.
From 1987 to 2014 the building housed the Institute of German Philology of the University of Szczecin. What the stable is used for now, and whether it is possible to go inside, should be checked before a visit. From the outside it can be viewed during a walk around Castle Hill, together with the Royal Gate.
